Torben Grael was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil and raised in Niteroi. Middle child of three boys, Torben showed talent in his early childhood and the desire to share the passion of sailing like his mother’s family, the Schmidts from Denmark, and his grandfather Preben, a sailing pioneer in Brazil. With the support of his father, from a military background, and his mother, Torben and his younger brother Lars followed in the footsteps of their uncles Axel and Erik, the first international champions of Brazilian sailing. Together in 1983, Lars and Torben won their first World title in Snipes at Porto, Portugal.. And they haven’t stopped…
From then on, Torben has built a sailing career that has taken him to the highest level of the sport. More than 30 National wins in many classes, 6 World championship titles, 5 Olympic medals, finalist at the 2000 America’s Cup, the world’s most prestigious regatta, and last but not least the brilliant victory in the 2009 Volvo Ocean Race. Torben is currently the only sailor in the world with 5 olympic medals and Brazil’s most recognized Olympic athlete of all times. Besides that, he is considered the world’s most complete sailor for excelling at all 3 sailing disciplines: Olympic, Offshore and Match Race.

Torben Grael nasceu em São Paulo e se criou em Niterói. Filho do meio de uma trinca de irmãos, logo cedo demonstrou talento e vontade de seguir a saga da família materna, os Schmidt, oriundos da Dinamarca, cujo patriarca Preben foi um dos pioneiros da vela brasileira. Incentivado pelo pai, um militar do Exército, e pela mãe, ela mesmo também uma velejadora, Torben e seu irmão mais novo, Lars, seguiram os passos dos tios maternos Axel e Erik, primeiros grandes campeões de nossa vela. E em 1983, em dupla, conquistaram seu primeiro campeonato mundial, na classe Snipe, no Porto, em Portugal. E não pararam mais.
Daí em diante Torben seguiria uma carreira que o levou ao mais alto do desporto mundial. Foram mais de 30 títulos brasileiros em diversas classes, como são chamados os tipos diferentes de barcos a vela, 6 títulos mundiais, 5 medalhas olímpicas, uma final de America’s Cup – a regata mais antiga e prestigiada da Vela mundial -, e a consagradora vitória na regata de volta ao mundo em 2009. Com este currículo, Torben é hoje o velejador com maior número de medalhas olímpicas no mundo e o maior esportista olímpico brasileiro de todos os tempos. Além de ser considerado o velejador mais completo de todo o globo já que brilhou nos 3 principais tipos de competição a vela: a olímpica, a oceânica e em match race.
